Foreign Architectural Offices in China

Print

From the 1990s on, foreign architectural offices started entering the Chinese market. In the beginning, operating mainly from Hong Kong, these practices were mostly market-oriented, business-savvy and corporate (often American) firms. In 1998 the first open international competition was organized in China, in Beijing.

Foreign architecture practices need always to cooperate with a Local Design Institute, as they hold the required licenses and permits. Generally foreign offices undertake the design of a project, while their Chinese partners are in charge of the construction documents, the construction, and its supervision.
