Tropenmuseum presents the exhibition Secret Love on the issue of sexual diversity of China

Taboo love in China. The internationally acclaimed exhibition Secret Love is now on tour. 24 artists contribute with approximately 150 works that all are expressions on the subjects of identity, sexuality and norms. Secret Love is the world's first large contemporary art exhibition from China on this theme and therefore forms a new chapter in the country's art history.

Titled Secret Love, the exhibition wants to show the force in the changes that Chinese society is undergoing and the significance of that for the individual. World famous Chinese names such as the Gao Brothers, Chi Peng, Ma Liuming and Zhang Yuan present photographs, video installations, paintings and performances about taboo love – Secret Love.

Chinese society is experiencing rapid changes, resulting in shifting views on sexuality and identity. This change is particularly evident when it comes to LGBTQ people. Homosexuality was decriminalised in 1997 and is since 2001 no longer regarded as a mental illness. But many taboos remain. The internet and a more open society have brought greater awareness of individual rights. Discover modern China, where art and visual culture contribute towards increased consciousness and dialogue in the fight against taboos and prejudices.

The world premiere of Secret Love was at the Museum of Far Eastern Antiquities in Stockholm in autumn 2012. At the Museum of World Culture in Gothenburg 2013 the exhibition had an important addition with the female artist Li Xinmo, who participates in multiple arts including photography and performance art. The majority of the artists presented in Secret Love belong to the younger generations, born after the introduction of the one-child policy around 1980. The curator of the exhibition is the Museums of World Culture's Si Han who has spent several years on an extensive research project. The result is an exciting meeting of Chinese contemporary art that has never before been exhibited on this scale on these themes.

Artists in the exhibition includes: Cheng Juanzi, Chi Peng, Cui Zi, Fan Popo, Gao Brothers, Han Meichao, Jiang Qigu, Li Guangxin, Li Xiaofeng, Li Xinmo, Lin Zhipeng, Ma Liuming, Mu Xi, Qiu Jiongjiong, Ren Hang, Song Jianing, Shi Tou, Wang Zi, Wei Jiangang, Xiyadie, Yang Guowei, Zhang Yuan and Zheng Bo.
